Box Score MILWAUKEE - Junior Beth Young hit a game-tying three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game and cap a furious comeback by the MSOE softball team in a rain-shortened game played Friday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.
The Raiders and Sabres were scheduled to play two games, but the umpires called the first game due to rain with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. If the first game is completed and the second game is played, Marian would lead 17-7 after scoring 10 runs in the top of the ninth. If the game is abandoned, it will end as a 7-7 tie.
After combining to score just two runs in seven innings, the teams each plated six runs in the eighth. After MU took a 7-1 lead, the Red & White rallied to tie the score, puntuated by Young's home run to right.
In the eighth, freshman Caitlyn Moran led off with a walk and junior Katie Ready doubled. Moran scored on a ground out and Ready was plated on freshman Alex Cook's ground-rule double to right centerfield to make it 7-3.
Junior Lauren Boyle and freshman Hannah Wassmann followed with back-to-back singles to plate Cook. Then, two batters later, Young tied the game at 7-7 with her third home run of the game.
Marian utilized five walks and four singles to score their six runs in the top half of the inning.
A double steal led to the Sabres first run with two outs in the third inning. The Red & White defense played for the runner stealing second, allowing the runner at third to swipe home.
Ready led off the sixth inning with a triple and scored two batters later on a single to left by Cook.
Sophomore Shannon Curtis threw 7.2 innings. She allowed just five hits and struck out five, but walked seven batters. Sophomore Callie Wightman closed out the eighth inning.
