Curtis' Shutout at Dominican Earns Split for MSOE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOREST PARK, Ill. – Sophomore Shannon Curtis fired a three-hit shutout in game one and junior Lauren Boyle homered twice in game two as the MSOE softball team earned a doubleheader split at Dominican Sunday afternoon.

The Raiders (13-23, 4-16 NACC) took game one 4-0, but the Stars (26-12, 14-8 NACC) scored four unanswered runs to overcome a 5-2 deficit to claim the second game 6-5.

Curtis (8-14) scattered three hits and a pair of walks over seven innings, striking out three for her fourth shutout of the season. She worked three 1-2-3 innings in the game and allowed single base runners over three other frames.

Freshman Alex Cook went 3-for-3 with a run and RBI in game one, while freshman Hannah Wassmann hit a home run as part of a 2-for-3 effort in the opener.

It was Wassmann's home run that gave MSOE the 1-0 lead in the second. The team then added to its advantage with a three-run third inning to give Curtis all the offense she needed.

Junior Katie Ready led off the third inning with a double. Freshman Gabbi Garcia followed with a single and stole second base. Cook's single scored Ready. She then stole second, allowing Garcia to score and moving up to third in the process. Freshman Caitlyn Moran then plated Cook on a suicide squeeze.

Junior Lauren Boyle homered twice in game two as the Raiders scored first, leading 2-0 and again at 5-2. Unfortunately, Dominican rallied for two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to secure the victory.

Boyle's first home run was a two-run shot in the third inning and staked her team to its first lead. An unearned run in the bottom half of the frame and another run in the fourth tied the game at 2-2.

In the fifth inning, Boyle led off with her second home run of the game. Moran then followed with a double and junior Beth Young singled. Wassmann then scored Moran with a single to left field. Two batters later, Young came around to score on a Stars error.

Curtis started game two, as well, scattering six hits and a pair of earned runs over 4.2 innings. She struck out two and walked one. Moran (1-3) pitched the final 1.1 innings and suffered the loss.

The Raiders return to the field Monday, hosting Marian in a continuation of Friday's delayed doubleheader. At 4 p.m., the teams will finish game one, which will then be followed by the second game.
