Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's basketball team shot over 50 percent for much of the night, but could not keep up with a hot-shooting Carroll team in falling 87-70 Tuesday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (2-6) slowed the Pioneers (6-2), which are receiving votes in this week's D3hoops.com national poll, in the second half, but not enough to overtake the visitors.
Freshman Matthew Kirmse led four players in double-figures with 15 points off the bench, thanks to four 3-pointers. Junior Tegan Miles finished with 14 points and senior Alex Darville and sophomore Jason Palesse had 10 points each.
Kyle Keranen buried six treys in the game on his way to 23 points to pace Carroll. Ben Widdes had 11.es had 21 points and 10 assists while both players tallied five steals. Tanner Zaeske added 13 points and Kale Maupin
The Raiders jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead inside the first three-plus minutes after five-straight points from Miles. It was then that the visitors caught fire and started to steadily get into the game. The Pioneers eventually tied the game at 18-18 and took their first lead at 19-18 a pair of free throws near the midway point of the half.
Carroll shot 73.9 percent from the floor in the first half, helping it take control of the game. MSOE did not back down, though, hanging within two possessions until only the final two minutes of the period when CU closed out the half with three 3-pointers to take a 48-37 lead into the break.
The Red & White defense limited the Pios to 43.8 shooting in the second half, but, after a quick five points to start the second half made it 48-42, the Raiders found themselves trailing by double-digits for the final 18-plus minutes.
MSOE also cooled off a bit in the second half, finishing at a season-best 49 percent for the game. It got to the free throw line 23 times, converting 16, and went 6-of-15 from beyond the arc. Carroll ended the night at 56.4 percent, but it was an 11-for-21 clip from three-point range that seemed to stifle any Red & White comeback attempts.
The Raiders return to the floor Thursday, hosting Wisconsin Lutheran in their final game before the new year.
