Box Score MILWAUKEE – Senior Austin Stueck scored 29 points, but it was not enough as the MSOE men's basketball team fell short against Marian 67-62 Wednesday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (12-12, 9-10 NACC) pulled within three on a Stueck three-pointer with 8.1 seconds to go and he forced a turnover 1.8 seconds later, but they could not pull even with the Sabres (13-12, 10-10 NACC) in the final seconds.
Senior Connor Patterson added 14 points and sophomore Greg Pigg added 10 off the bench for MSOE.
Alex Manhardt led Marian with 16 points, while Alex Stecker added 13 and Josh Creed 12.
The Raiders played from behind from much of the second half, pulling within three points 61-58 on a pair of Stueck free throws with 1:38 remaining. Creed answered with a put-back dunk and, after MSOE hit a free throw, Stecker hit a jumper to make it 65-59 at the 38-second mark.
Stueck then drained a contested three-pointer with just 8.1 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds, Stueck then forced a turnover to give MSOE a chance to tie with 6.3 seconds on the clock. The Raiders' game-tying three-pointer was off the mark and Creed hit a pair of free throws to seal the game.
After the Red & White opened the second half with a bucket for a brief 30-28 lead, the Sabres went on an extended 17-5 run to open a 45-35 lead. Stueck answered with a basket, but Stecker came back with a three-pointer to make it an 11-point game.
MSOE responded with a 13-6 run of its own to pull within 51-48. Patterson scored nine points during the run. Unfortunately, MU started to pull away again as Manhardt went on a personal 6-2 run to re-establish a seven-point lead for the visitors.
After that, the Sabres played with the lead with the advantage alternating between three and five points heading into the final moments.
The Red & White got off to a cold start, missing its first seven shots in falling in a 9-0 hole. The team went 5:55 without a made field goal to start the game, but quickly made up for lost time by shooting seven for its next 11 in taking a 17-16 lead after five-straight points from Stueck.
The first half ended at 28-28 as neither team was able to pull ahead by more than three points over the final nine-plus minutes of the frame.
MSOE struggled from the field on the night, shooting just 33.8 percent and 4-of-17 on three-point tries. It did turn the ball over just 10 times, while forcing Marian into 17 miscues to help off-set the Sabres' 46.0 percent shooting and 7-of-16 on attempts from beyond the arc.
The Raiders close out the regular season Saturday, hosting Rockford.
