Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Junior Shannon Curtis allowed just one earned run in a complete-game performance in game one to lead the MSOE softball team to a doubleheader split with Alverno Wednesday evening at MSOE Athletic Field.
The Raiders (4-10, 2-4 NACC) took game one, 3-2, behind Curtis' strong performance in the circle, while the Inferno (9-15, 2-6 NACC) rebounded to take game two 10-5.
Curtis (2-4) scattered six hits over seven innings in winning her second-straight start. She struck out three and did not walk a batter in the outing.
MSOE struck first in both games, with sophomore Gabbi Garcia walking in the opening frame of game one. She stole second and came around to score on a single to right field by sophomore Caitlyn Moran.
After Alverno pulled a goal back with an unearned run in the fourth inning, senior Lauren Boyle put the Red & White back ahead at 2-1 with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. The team then added an insurance run in the sixth inning on sophomore Hannah Wassmann's RBI double to left field.
The run would prove vital, as the Inferno opened the seventh inning with three-straight hits to plate a run and put runners at the corners with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third, Curtis induced a pair of nocuous ground outs to end the game.
The ground ball was Curtis's friend, as 17 of the 21 outs she recorded were on the ground, with just one fly out in the game.
In the nightcap, junior Callie Wightman finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs for the Raiders. She opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning and hit her first collegiate home run in the seventh inning to center field.
With MSOE leading 1-0, the Inferno caught fire with two runs in the second, third and fourth innings. The visitors then put up three runs in the fifth inning to open a 9-4 lead.
Moran (0-5) got the start in the circle for the Raiders, throwing four innings and striking out four. Wightman finished out the game with three innings of work and also tallied four strikeouts.
Senior Katie Ready also had two hits, a run scored and RBI in game two, while freshman Rachel Ziemba scored pair of runs.
MSOE continues a busy week Thursday at Marian. The teams will play a doubleheader that was originally scheduled for April 2, but postponed three times.
