Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Junior Shannon Curtis put together a strong pitching performance in game one and the MSOE softball team finished with 11 hits in game two, it was not enough as the team was swept in a doubleheader by Marian Thursday evening at Smith Fields.
The Raiders (2-6, 4-12 NACC) fell in game one 2-0 and nearly came back from a 6-1 deficit to 6-5 in game two, but could not catch the Sabres (17-7, 6-2 NACC) in an 8-5 loss.
Junior Shannon Curtis (2-5) did her best to stifle the league's top offense, as Marian entered the day averaging 8.36 runs per game. She allowed just four hits and two runs over six innings and struck out three.
The Red & White offense was unable to string any hits together until the seventh inning. With two outs, junior Callie Wightman and freshman Rachel Ziemba had back-to-back singles with two outs, but the rally ended there.
The Raider bats got going In the second game, but not until falling in a 6-1 hole. They pulled within one with four runs in the sixth inning, but MU tacked on a pair of insurance runs to put the game out of reach.
After being shutout in the opener, MSOE got on the board in the first inning. Senior Katie Ready led off the game with a single and stole second. She moved up to third on a ground out and scored on the first of two doubles by junior Callie Wightman.
Marian responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and broke open the game with four more runs in the third.
Wightman's second double led off the sixth inning and started a four-run rally. Sophomore Caitlyn Moran followed with a double and scored on freshman Rachel Ziemba's single to right field. Senior Beth Young then greeted a new pitcher with a two-run home run, pulling the Red & White within 6-5 with still no one out.
Senior Lauren Boyle kept the rally going as she followed with a single, but the Sabres buckled down and got three-straight outs to escape any more damage.
Moran (0-6) got the start in the circle and went the distance. She allowed 11 hits and eight runs in six innings with four strikeouts.
