Box Score 2 LISLE, Ill – The MSOE softball team rallied to force extra innings with a run in the seventh inning and won with two runs in the ninth to force a split with Benedictine in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Sports Complex.
The Raiders (5-15, 3-9 NACC) took game 2 by a 3-1 score after falling to the Eagles (20-10, 8-4 NACC) 6-0 in the opener.
MSOE trailed 1-0 heading into its final at bat in game two, but junior Kailey Smith kicked off a rally with a one-out single. Back-to-back fielder's choices moved the tying run to third base with two outs. The Raiders then capitalized on an error to even the score.
In the top of the ninth, sophomore Hannah Wassmann led off with a single and moved to second. She then came around to score on an error. Senior Lauren Boyle followed with a triple and scored on senior Katie Ready's single to tack on an insurance run at 3-1.
Junior Shannon Curtis (3-6) went the distance for the Red & White, scattering six hits and four walks over nine innings. She struck out four and allowed just one unearned run in the game. It was her sixth-complete game in as many NACC starts. She lowered her conference ERA to 1.47, which is fourth.
Benedictine limited the Raiders to two hits in the opener in the shutout. They did threaten for a run in the fifth, as freshman Rachel Ziemba hit a one-out triple. After a hit batter and fly out, there were two runners in scoring position, but the Eagles starter induced a ground ball to end the threat.
Meanwhile, BenU opened the scoring with three runs in the third, two more in the fifth and another in the sixth.
The Raiders return to the diamond Wednesday, hosting Mount Mary at MSOE Athletic Field.
