Box Score 2 ROCKFORD, Ill. – The MSOE softball team had 27 hits and scored 17 runs in sweeping past Rockford in a NACC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Smith Athletic Field.
The Raiders (9-15, 5-9 NACC) pushed their winning streak to five-straight games with an 8-1 win in game one and 9-2 victory in game two against the Regents (2-30, 0-16 NACC).
Junior Callie Wightman was the star in game one with four hits and four RBIs to back sophomore Caitlyn Moran's big start in the circle.
Wightman got the scoring started quickly, driving in freshman Rachel Ziemba with a single. Ziemba had a one-out single and advanced to scoring position on an error. Freshman Emily Snow followed with one of her three hits in the game and Moran plated Wightman with a single of her own.
RU would answer back with its only run of the game in the bottom half of the inning.
MSOE then broke open the game with four runs in the fifth. Senior Katie Ready led off with a double, followed by Ziemba, who singled and stole second. Wightman plated the pair with a triple and scored on another Snow single. Two batters later, senior Beth Young scored Snow with a double to make it 6-1.
An RBI double from senior Lauren Boyle and another run-scoring single by Wightman in the sixth inning capped the scoring.
In the circle, Moran (2-8) went the distance, scattering six hits and two walks to allow just one run. She struck out a season-high five in the process.
Ready had three hits with two RBIs and Moran drove in three runs in game two, backing another solid outing from junior Shannon Curtis.
The Raiders opened the scoring in the third inning on a two-run, two-out rally. After two quick outs, Ziemba singled and the next two hitters walked to load the bases. Moran plated a pair with a single to left field.
Like the first game, Rockford immediately pulled a run back after MSOE got on the board. Also like the first game, the Raiders broke through for four runs in a frame. This time it was the fourth.
With one out, Young, junior Melissa Mahoney and Ready singled consecutively to score a run. Ziemba was then hit by a pitch. Two more runs came around to score on an error and Snow drove in another with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1.
The Red & White added two more runs to its lead in the fifth, as Young led off with a double. Mahoney walked and Ready drove in Young with a single. Freshman Liz Gale followed with another single to make it 8-1.
Moran capped the team's scoring with an inside the park home run to the left field corner in the sixth inning.
The Regents would tack on a consolation run in the sixth inning, but would get no closer.
Curtis struck out six over seven innings for her third-straight win. She worked around five hits and three walks to allow just two runs. She has now lowered her season ERA following each of her last nine starts.
The Raiders are back in action Sunday, hosting Edgewood for a doubleheader.
