Ziemba, Curtis Lead Exciting Sweep of Edgewood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – Freshman Rachel Ziemba hit the game-winning home run in game one and junior Shannon Curtis tossed a one-hit shutout in game two to lead the MSOE softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Edgewood and extend its winning streak to seven games Sunday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.

The Raiders (11-15, 7-9 NACC) trailed 5-1 in the second inning of game one, but stormed back with six unanswered runs for a 7-5 win. In game two, Curtis overpowered the Eagles (14-20, 6-12 NACC) in a 3-0 shutout.

Edgewood scored two runs in the first inning and three times in the second to take a 5-1 lead in the opener, but MSOE came back.

The Red & White plated one run in the second inning to make it 5-2, then tied the score with three runs in the third.

Ziemba lad led off the inning with a double, but was left at third with two outs. Sophomore Caitlyn Moran then plated her with a single up the middle. Sophomore Hannah Wassman walked and senior Beth Young roped a double to the wall in right-center to make it 5-4. An error then allowed the tying run to score.

After the second inning, Moran settled down in the circle and danced around danger the rest of the game, while EC went to its bullpen for back-to-back scoreless innings against MSOE.

In the sixth inning, senior Katie Ready reached on a one-out infield single. Ziemba then followed with a two run home run to right-center field to break the tie.

The Eagles would get a lead-off double in the seventh, but that threat ended at third base.

Moran (3-8) earned her third-straight win in the circle despite allowing 17 hits in the game. She bent, but did not break in stranding a base runner in scoring position in each of the final five innings. Twice—in the third and sixth innings—EC loaded the bases with just one out, but left the bases loaded.

All told, Moran struck out three, walked one and allowed just three earned runs over seven innings.

At the plate in game one, Ready, Ziemba, Snow and Young each had two hits.

The story of game two was Curtis (6-6), as she used just 65 pitches (50 strikes) to get through seven innings. She struck out seven and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. In fact, the fourth was when the Eagles got both of their base-runners, a lead-off error and a single. The remaining six innings saw the visitors retired 1-2-3.

At the plate, the Raiders carried over the momentum from game one, striking for two runs in the opening frame. Junior Callie Wightman hit a two-out double to start things off. Snow followed with a single, but moved up to third when Wightman scored on an error. Moran then plated Snow to make it 2-0.

MSOE had three more base runners before the sixth inning, but did not threaten. But, in the sixth, Wassmann led off with a single. Back-to-back sacrifice bunts put her on third with two outs. Sophomore Laryn Brinkman then laced a pinch-hit single down the left field line to score Wassmann with an insurance run.

Snow and Moran each collected two hits in the second game, with Snow extending her hitting streak to nine-straight games. Over the streak, she is 15-for-30 (.500) with five multi-hit games.

The Raiders return to the field Tuesday, hosting Concordia Wisconsin in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
