Raiders Bust Out Big Bats for CUW Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – Junior Callie Wightman and freshman Emily Snow both homered in each game of a doubleheader as the MSOE softball team split with Concordia Wisconsin Tuesday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.

The Raiders (12-16, 8-10 NACC) fell 6-2 in game one, then defeated the Falcons (24-12, 12-6 NACC) 12-4 in a game shortened to six innings via the run rule.

MSOE hit five home runs in the day after entering with six home runs this season coming in, as sophomore Hannah Wassmann also got into the act with her home run in game two.

CUW struck for two runs in the first inning of game two, but Wightman hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Senior Katie Ready led off the inning with a walk and, two batters later, Wightman homered to right. Snow then followed with a home run to left.

The visitors pulled that run back to tie the score in the third and took the lead at 4-3 with another score in the fourth inning.

The Raiders then broke open the game with seven runs in their half of the fourth, sending 11 batters to the plate in the frame. Wassmann opened things up with a one-out home run to left field. A walk, single and passed ball preceded an RBI single from junior Kailey Smith.

After a pitching change, Ready and freshman Rachel Ziemba greeted the new hurler with back-to-back RBI singles. Wightman was hit by a pitch, Snow hit an RBI double and sophomore Caitlyn Moran followed with an RBI single to open a 10-4 lead in the game.

MSOE then ended the game with two runs in the sixth inning without recording an out. Ziemba and Wightman led off with back-to-back singles. Snow walked to load the bases and Moran plated Ziemba with another run-scoring single. Wightman then scored on a wild pitch to invoke the eight-run rule.

In addition to collecting two hits and three RBIs at the plate, Moran (4-8) also went the distance in the circle. She scattered 11 hits and allowed three earned runs. She struck out five and walked just one.

Eight different players scored runs in the game, while all nine reached base safely and eight had hits. The 2-3-4-5 hitters of Ziemba, Wightman, Snow and Moran combined for nine hits, with Ziemba tallying three.

Snow, who was 2-for-3 with a walk in game two, had gone 3-for-3 in game one to extend her hitting streak to 11-straight games. She is hitting .556 (20-for-36) over the streak to improve her batting average to .425 on the year.

Like the second game, Concordia Wisconsin scored first in the top of the first inning. Also like the second game, Wightman tied the score in the bottom half with a home run.

This time, the score remained level until the fourth inning when Snow led off with a mammoth home run to left field for a 2-1 lead.

Unfortunately, CUW loaded the bases with one out in their next half inning. Junior Shannon Curtis looked to strand the bases loaded for the second time in the game and got a shallow fly ball to maintain the status quo. Becky Bonnin then dumped a pinch-hit, two-run single just over the head of second base to give the Falcons the lead.

The visitors would then tack on three insurance runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

Curtis (6-7) saw her personal four-game winning streak come to an end amidst her 11th-straight complete game. She allowed eight hits and four earned runs. She struggled with command, walking seven, but struck out five.

The game one loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for MSOE, but the win in the nightcap was its first over CUW in exactly 10 years (April 26, 2006).

The Raiders close out their home schedule Friday, hosting Concordia Chicago.
