Men's Basketball Holds off Concordia Chicago 72-66

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Five different players scored between nine and 14 points for the MSOE men's basketball team as it utilized a balanced attack to hold off Concordia Chicago 72-66 Saturday afternoon at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (7-6, 6-3 NACC) led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but saw the Cougars (3-11, 2-9 NACC) tie the game late in regulation before pulling away for their fifth-straight win.

Senior Collin Seubert led the charge with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while also hitting three key free throws in the final minute to clinch the game. Senior Dylan Sommerfeld scored 11 points off the bench and freshman Matthew Kirmse had 10.

Junior Tegan Miles had nine points and eight rebounds and sophomore Jason Palesse finished with nine points, including some crucial drives to the basket late in the second half.

Concordia Chicago got a game-high 17 points from Mitch Pellissier. Sheldon Moore added 12 points and Mike Walmer 11.

Despite a sizable lead in the first half and a 10-point advantage at intermission, the Raiders found CUC hanging within one and two possessions for much of the second half. The visitors actually tied the game on a couple of occasions at 55-55 and 57-57. After the latter tie, Palesse scored a basket and Somerfeld followed with back-to-back layups to re-open a six-point advantage at 63-57.

The Cougars would pull within 69-66, but MSOE forced three-straight empty possessions to end the game, with Seubert's free throws removing all doubt from the outcome.

Much like the end, the first minutes of the game was close, with CUC leading by as many as six in the early minutes and the Raiders ahead just 17-16 after a Pelissier layup at the 10:39 mark of the first half. Then, the Red & White went to work, rattling off an 18-3 run over a six-minute span, holding the visitors without a field goal for the first five of those minutes, and opening a 35-19 lead with just 4:33 to play before halftime.

MSOE shot 40.7 percent for the game, but found its way to the free throw line 34 times, making 23. Nineteen of those trips to the charity stripe came in the first half as it made 15. Concordia Chicago was limited to 37.1 percent shooting in the game, but did make nine 3-pointers among 26 attempts.

The Raiders remain home to host Concordia Wisconsin on Tuesday.
