Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Freshman Gabi Roderman hit a two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning of game two to secure a doubleheader sweep for the MSOE softball team over Marian Saturday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.
The Raiders (11-5, 2-0 NACC) won game one 5-1, then won game two 4-3 after trailing the Sabres (12-4, 0-2 NACC) 3-0 heading into their final at-bat.
In the dramatic second game, MSOE scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Sophomore Rachel Ziemba led off with a single but was replaced on the base paths after a fielder's choice by freshman Amanda Manssen. After Manssen moved up to second on a ground out, Roderman hit a 0-1 pitch up the middle for a base hit. Manssen was waved around third and beat a good throw and tag to score the winning run.
Manssen was also at the heart of the comeback, driving in the tying run with a single up the middle in the seventh inning. With the Red & White trailing 3-0, junior Caitlyn Moran started the rally with a lead-off single, then scored two batters later on sophomore Emily Snow's double to the wall in left field. Ziemba then walked to put the tying runner on base. A passed ball put both runners in scoring position and Manssen followed with her single.
The Raiders were riding high after their game-one win but could not get anything going against the Marian starter Paige Rauhut. They managed four late hits and four walks through the first six innings but could not plate a run. Meanwhile, the Sabres jumped on the board first with a run in the second inning and a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.
Senior Shannon Curtis (7-3) pitched the final 5.0 innings to get the win after going the distance in game one. She worked around four hits and allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out five. Sophomore Liz Gale had gotten the start, hurling 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and a walk. She allowed five hits and one run.
Roderman finished the second game 3-for-5 as eight of the nine starters eventually collected a hit in the game after a slow start. Manssen had a pair of hits and Ziemba reached base four times with a hit and three walks.
Curtis was dominant in game one, striking out six to get the opening win. She allowed six hits and a run and did not allow a walk.
At the plate, it was another balanced attack, with six different players collecting hits. Manssen and had two hits each. Snow had a hit and two walks and drove in two runs while sophomore Julia Marsh scored twice.
Roderman got the scoring started with a RBI single in the second inning after Ziemba led off with a double. Then, Marian tied the game in the fourth inning. With runners at the corners, the visitors sacrificed the runner on first to a caught stealing to tie the game with the runner scoring from third.
The Raiders then pulled away with a three-run fifth inning and another run in the sixth. Freshman Kiersti Davis opened the scoring with a RBI double and Snow followed with a two-run single down the right field line with no outs. That would be all the runs they mustered in that frame but they tacked on the insurance run in the sixth, capitalizing on a MU error to score on a fielder's choice.
With hits in both ends of the doubleheader, Snow extended her hitting streak to 14 games. She has now collected a hit in 15-of-16 games this season.
MSOE returns to the field Sunday night with a doubleheader against Dominican in Rosemont, Illinois.
