Box Score 2 ROSEMONT, Illinois – Sophomore Emma Megal hit a go-ahead bases-loaded triple in game one and sophomore Liz Gale threw 5.0 shutout innings in game two to lead the MSOE softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Dominican Sunday evening at the Ballpark.
The Raiders (13-5, 4-0 NACC) snapped the Stars' (15-5, 0-2 NACC) 14-game winning streak in the opener, scoring three times in the sixth inning to win 8-7. Then, they shut down the DU offense in a 2-1 pitcher's duel in game two.
Dominican entered the day averaging 8.1 runs per game but Gale (4-1) was up to the task in game two. She allowed just two hits over 5.0 innings of work, striking out one. She danced out of trouble in the fourth inning after Dominican put runners on second and third with just one out. She induced the next batter to ground out to shortstop and escaped on a comeback that Gale fielded herself.
Senior Shannon Curtis came on in relief and finished the game for her first career save. She allowed one hit in the sixth inning, then struck out the first two hitters of the seventh. Back-to-back walks put a runner in scoring position and Jacadi Rivera got the Stars on the board with a single through the right side. Curtis then came back and induced a ground out to end the game.
The Raiders got on the board with a single run in the fifth inning and tacked on a much-needed insurance run in the seventh. Both runs came on wild pitches.
In the fifth inning, freshman Kiersti Davis and sophomore Emily Snow had back-to-back singles. Then, two batters later, advanced two bases each on back-to-back wild pitches with Davis coming in to score. Freshman Amanda Manssen hit a two-out single in the seventh and stole second base. After a walk to Megal, two consecutive wild pitches gifted the Red & White another run.
Davis and Snow had two hits each for the Raiders.
MSOE had jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Dominican in the opener but needed a late rally to score the victory.
Trailing 6-5 heading into the sixth inning, a new Stars pitcher got back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning. Sophomore Emily Snow then started the rally with a single. Sophomore Rachel Ziemba followed with one of her three walks in the game and Manssen walked to load the bases. Megal then hit a triple to the gap in right-center field to clear the bases and thrust the Red & White into the lead at 8-7.
Senior Shannon Curtis (8-3) held DU to an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to sophomore Julia Marsh and freshman Gabi Roderman linking up on a relay throw to erase the tying run at the plate. Curtis went the distance with eight strikeouts.
The Raiders opened the scoring in the first inning when three-straight hitters reached base and Manssen plated the first run with a ground out. Then, in the second, Roderman led off with a double and came around to score on freshman Kim White's single. Three batters later, White scored on a ground out by Davis. Another White single made it 4-0 in the third inning.
Dominican got on the board with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Red & White pulled one of those runs back in the top of the fourth, capitalizing on an error, to remain in the lead 5-2.
The Stars came back to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. They then took the lead with a run in the fifth.
Megal paced the offense with three hits while Snow and White had two hits each. Snow's four hits on the day pushed her hitting streak to 16 games.
The Raiders return to action at Maranatha with a doubleheader Thursday.
