Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Freshman Gabi Roderman drove in three runs in each game and the pitching staff combined on a two-hit shutout in game one as the MSOE softball team swept Alverno 8-0 and 8-5 Friday afternoon at Alverno Field.
The Raiders (21-9, 10-4 NACC) surpassed 20 wins on the season for just the fourth time in school history with its sweep of the Inferno (10-20, 3-11 NACC).
Roderman went 4-for-4 in the opener, driving in a run with each of her first three hits and coming around to score after her fourth.
MSOE opened the scoring with a three-run first inning, building on back-to-back one-out walks. Freshman Amanda Manssen hit an RBI double and junior Caitlyn Moran followed with a RBI single. Roderman then scored Moran with a single up the middle.
The Raiders tacked on two more runs in both the third and fourth innings before putting the finishing touches on the win with a single run in the seventh.
Moran started a two-out rally in the third with a single and stole second. Roderman plated her and, after moving to second on freshman Kim White's single, she scored on senior Callie Wightman's base hit. In the fourth, sophomore Emily Snow drove in a run with a double and scored on another Roderman base hit.
Roderman led off the seventh inning with a double and moved up to third on a ground out. She then came home when senior Kailey Smith grounded out to the right side of the infield.
In the circle, senior Shannon Curtis (13-6) picked up the first of two hits on the day with 4.1 innings of shutout ball. She allowed just one hit and struck out eight in the outing. Moran struck out three and allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings to close out MSOE's sixth shutout of the season.
Snow took center stage in game two, going 4-for-4 to complement another three-RBI game by Roderman and two-hit performances from Moran and sophomore Emma Megal.
Once again, the Raiders got off to a great start with another three runs in their first at-bat of the game. Snow singled with two outs and Manssen followed with a walk. Moran plated the first run with a single and Roderman knocked a two-run single to the gap in right-center field.
Alverno did respond with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at 3-3 on an Ashlie Rossi home run.
MSOE jumped back in the lead with a two-run third inning. Snow led off with a single and scored on Moran's triple to the left field corner. She then came in on a sacrifice fly by Roderman. Manssen then had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning for a three-run advantage.
The Inferno pulled a run back in the fifth inning, only to see the Red & White score twice more in the sixth inning to effectively put the game out of reach. Megal hit a one-out single, stole second, then scored from three on a wild pitch. Another Snow single put her on base, with a wild pitch and an error allowing her to score to make it 8-4.
The hosts mounted a small two-out rally in the sixth inning with three-straight singles. They plated a run but the Raider defense threw out a runner trying to advance to get out of the inning. Then, Curtis sent Alverno down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning to complete the win.
Curtis threw the final 5.0 innings of the game, striking out four and allowing just two runs. Sophomore Liz Gale started and went 2.0 innings. She struck out two.
Snow has been on fire at the plate this week. She reached base in all seven plate appearances in a doubleheader against Benedictine Monday, then went 5-for-6 with a pair of walks Friday. In her last four games, she's 11-for-12 (.913) and has raised her season batting average to .484. Snow has reached base safely in 27-straight games and stroked her 16th double of the season in game one, one off the NACC record for a single season.
MSOE's 21 wins are third-most in school history, trailing only the 24 wins it posted in 1997 and 2014.
The Raiders return to the field Saturday, hosting Rockford in a doubleheader.
