Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Senior Shannon Curtis struck out 11 in a two-hit shutout in game one, then the MSOE softball team jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first inning of game two in rolling to a doubleheader sweep of Rockford Saturday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.
The Raiders (23-9, 12-4 NACC) broke open a pitcher's duel in game one with a four-run fifth inning in a 4-0 win, then jumped all over the Regents (6-26, 1-15 NACC) in the opening frame on their way to a 14-4 win in five innings.
Curtis (14-6) hurled her fourth shutout of the season, allowing just three base runners in the game on a pair of singles and a walk.
Rockford countered in the circle with Stefaney Kenworthy, who allowed just one hit over the first four innings before the Raiders were able to get anything going offensively.
Senior Kailey Smith sparked the rally with a one-out walk. Back-to-back singles by sophomores Julia Marsh and Rachel Ziemba then loaded the bases. After a strikeout, sophomore Emily Snow lined a single to right-center field. Two runs scored easily and Ziemba added a third with aggressive base-running. Freshman Amanda Manssen then followed with a triple to the right-center gap to score Snow and make it 4-0.
While things took a while to get going in the opener, MSOE wasted no time in game two. The team batted around twice in the first inning, finishing with 13 runs on 13 hits. All nine batters registered at least one hit and scored at least one run in the inning, with sophomore Emma Megal and junior Caitlyn Moran each hitting RBI triples.
The Regents got on the board with a run in the top of the second inning and tacked on three runs in the fourth to make it 13-4. Ziemba then followed a Marsh double with a RBI single for another run in the bottom half of the inning.
Sophomore Liz Gale got the start in the circle and threw 2.0 innings, allowing four hits and a run. Moran (3-0) pitched the third and fifth innings, retiring all six batters she faced. Freshman Cailin Dilday also tossed an inning, striking out a pair in the fourth.
With hits in both ends of the doubleheader, Snow has now reached base safely in 29-straight games. Meanwhile, Ziemba drew her school-record 21st walk of the season in the first inning of game two.
The Raiders have now won five-straight games and will look to continue that run with a trip outside of league play Wednesday when they host Mount Mary at MSOE Field. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
