Curtis Fires 13-inning Shutout, Softball Sweeps WLC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – Senior Shannon Curtis fired a 13-hit shutout in game one and the MSOE softball team rallied from a 6-1 deficit with seven runs in the sixth inning of game two to sweep Wisconsin Lutheran in a NACC doubleheader Saturday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.

The Raiders (17-5, 6-0 NACC) clipped the Warriors (7-11, 4-2 NACC) 1-0 in game one on freshman Gabi Roderman's walk-off single to the wall in left-center field. Then, their late rally spoiled WLC's attempt at a split in an 8-7 game two victory.

MSOE extended its winning streak to 11-straight games and reached 17 wins in a season for just the fourth time on record with 18 regular season games remaining.

In the opener, Curtis (10-3) was dominant, striking out 13 and working around 10 hits and a walk for the win. The offense then came up big for her in the 13th inning with some familiar faces.

Seven days after Roderman drove in freshman Amanda Manssen from second with a walk-off single, the duo was back at it. Manssen singled and stole second base with one out in the 13th inning. Then, Roderman hit a deep fly ball that got down and allowed Manssen to score the game-winning run easily.

Curtis came up big in tight situations for the Red & White on multiple occasions to earn her shutout. WLC had loaded the bases with just one out in the 12th inning and she came back with a strikeout before inducing an inning-ending groundout. She also left two runners stranded in scoring position in the fourth inning and runners at the corners in the ninth.

Manssen and Roderman had two hits each to lead the offense.

MSOE and WLC met last season in the longest game of the season in NCAA Division III and the longest game in league history. Curtis pitched all 15 innings of that 4-3 Raider victory, as well. Today's 13-inning affair is the longest in the Division III so far this season.

After a 13-inning 1-0 game, game two was a stark contrast as Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to a lead with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth. The visitors seemed destined for a split until the Red & White rallied in the sixth.

The Raiders batted around in the sixth inning, sending 11 hitters to the plate. After a hit batter and a double, Manssen drove in the first run with a single and sophomore Emma Megal followed with a sacrifice fly. Roderman then followed with a double to make it 6-4.

Two batters later, with two outs, junior Caitlyn Moran and freshman Kiersti Davis hit back-to-back RBI singles, with Davis driving in two runs to take the lead. She advanced to second on the throw and third base on a wild pitch when sophomore Emily Snow walked. Snow then slowly stole second, drawing a throw and allowing Davis to steal home with an insurance run at 8-6.

After that, Moran (2-0) took to the circle and sent the Warriors down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning with three ground balls on three pitches to seal the win.

Game two was a team effort as just Manssen and sophomore Rachel Ziemba collected two hits. Seven starters collected a hit. The lone holdouts were Megal, who drove in a run and had two sacrifice hits, and Snow, who reached three times with two walks and a hit by a pitch.

Moran collected the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Sophomore Liz Gale got the start and tossed 4.2 innings. She struck out three.

Snow saw her 18-game hitting streak snapped in game two but remained active with her reached-base streak at 19 games. Meanwhile, Manssen is at 21-straight games reaching base safely.

The Raiders return to the field Sunday with a doubleheader at Concordia Wisconsin. First pitch at noon.
