Pondo Hurls Shutout as Softball Wins Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Florida – Freshman Lorrin Pondo threw a three-hit shutout against Capital to lead the MSOE softball team to its second of two wins Friday in Florida.

The Raiders (6-2) overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat Concordia Moorhead (3-6) 5-3 in the first game of the day, then rode Pondo's pitching to a 7-0 win over the Crusaders (2-6) later in the day.

Pondo (5-2) retired the first nine batters she faced against Capital and was never really threatened in racking up five strikeouts against no walks.

Juniors Rachel Ziemba, Emily Snow, and Emma Megal had two hits each in the game, with Ziemba scoring three runs and Snow driving in three. Megal scored twice.

Ziemba and Snow teamed on the opening run in the top of the first inning, as Ziemba led off the game with a triple. Two batters later, Snow drove her in with a single.

The game remained 1-0 until the MSOE broke open the game late with three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Megal and Ziemba led off the sixth inning with singles. They stood at second and third with two outs before Megal scored on an error and senior Caitlyn Moran followed with a two-run triple.

Megal sparked the seventh-inning rally, as well, reaching on a two-out single and stealing second base. Ziemba reached on an error, which scored Megal, and sophomore Kiki Davis followed with a single. Snow then plated both runners with a double to make it 7-0.

Capital put two runners on in just one inning, tallying a base hit and a hit batter in the seventh inning. Pondo responded by getting the next batter to pop out and end the game.

In game one, the Raiders also scored first with a single run in the first but saw Concordia Moorhead respond with three runs in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.

MSOE fought back with a single run in the third inning and another in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

Sophomore Amanda Manssen drove in both runs to level the game, singling in Snow after a one-out double in the third inning. In the fifth, Davis singled, advanced on an error, and stole third base. Manssen then hit a ground ball to second base to score the tying run.

The Raiders broke the tie with two runs in the sixth inning. After a lead-off error and sacrifice bunt, sophomore Riley Rossbach hit an RBI single for the go-ahead run. Another sacrifice bunt and passed ball put the runner on third base and Ziemba added an insurance run with an RBI single.

Davis finished with two hits in the game.

Pondo picked up the win against CCM, tossing 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. The Cobbers did load the bases with one out in the sixth inning and the score tied at 3-3 but Pondo responded with back-to-back strikeouts to snuff out the threat. She struck out three in the appearance, allowing just one hit and two walks.

Junior Liz Gale started the game in the circle and worked 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and a walk.

The Raiders close out their season-opening Florida trip Saturday with games against Nebraska Wesleyan and Wheaton. First pitch against NWU is at 1 p.m. central time.

Snow hit a one-out double in the third inning and came around to score on sophomore Amanda Manssen's single to center field. Then, in the fifth,
