Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – Freshman Lorrin Pondo struck out 16 batters to toss her second-straight shutout and lead the MSOE softball team to a pair of victories over Beloit, 4-0 and 9-1, Sunday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.
The Raiders (11-3) knocked out 24 hits on the day and the pitchers struck out 24 Buccaneers (3-15) hitters over 12 innings to complete the sweep and extend their winning streak to five-straight games.
Pondo (7-3) did not allow a runner past second base while striking out the side in three different innings. She scattered three hits and a walk in the game while pushing her personal shutout streak to 18.0 innings. She struck out 11 in a five-hit shutout at Carthage Saturday.
At the plate, junior Emily Snow went 3-for-3 to lead the way with a double, triple, and two runs scored. Pondo and junior Emma Megal added two hits each in the game.
Megal got the scoring started in the second inning. She led off with a triple and, two batters later, came home on a Pondo single. MSOE would tack on two more runs in the third innings after junior Rachel Ziemba led off with a single and stole second. Two batters later, Snow doubled in Ziemba and then came around on an error in the next at-bat.
Snow was the catalyst as the Raiders opened their lead to 4-0, leading off the fifth inning with a triple. She then scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore Amanda Manssen.
The offense kicked it up a notch in game two, scoring five runs in the first inning and pushing its lead to 8-0 with three more in the second.
Ten batters came to the plate in the opening frame with six hits. A lead-off error came around to score on a Snow single and Manssen followed with another single, which scored Snow. Two batters later, sophomore Riley Rossbach smashed her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot, to left field to make it 5-0.
The momentum carried over to the second inning when Megal led off with a single and stole second base. Snow and Manssen followed with back-to-back RBI doubles. Manssen moved up to third base on a long foul out and scored on a wild pitch.
Beloit cracked the scoreboard in the third inning on an RBI double but the Raiders quickly canceled out that run in the bottom half of the inning to keep the run rule intact.
Ziemba led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a Megal sacrifice fly. The run made it 9-1 and sealed the game's premature end two innings later.
Senior Sara McConnell (1-0) made her first collegiate appearance since 2014 and did not disappoint. She struck out the first three batters she faced and worked out of trouble in the second inning with three strikeouts to strand the bases loaded. She went 4.0 innings in the circle, allowing four hits and a run with eight strikeouts.
Junior Liz Gale then closed out the game with an eight-pitch perfect fifth inning of relief.
With five hits on the day, Snow reached base for the 50th and 51st-straight games while extending her hitting streak to 13-straight games.
The Raiders return to action next weekend, opening NACC play with a doubleheader against Concordia Chicago Saturday at MSOE Athletic Field.
