Softball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep vs. CUC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – Freshman Lorrin Pondo struck out 14 hitters and allowed just one run in game one but came out on the short end of a pitchers' duel in the MSOE softball team's doubleheader sweep at the hands of Concordia Chicago Tuesday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.

The Raiders (12-6, 1-3 NACC) fell 1-0 in eight innings in the opener before the Cougars (13-6, 4-0 NACC) broke open a one-run game with nine runs in the fourth inning of game two on the way to a 14-3 win in five innings.

Pondo (8-5) posted her fourth 10-strikeout game of the season, scattering nine hits and a walk over 8.0 innings. She did not allow a runner past second base until the eighth inning when a one-out double came around to score two hitters later on a single to right field. It would be the only run CUC would need.

MSOE was not lacking for offense, leading off each of the first six innings with a single. Unfortunately, the Red & White could not get the clutch hit it needed to drive in a run.

The Raiders' best chance came in the fourth inning when junior Emily Snow led off with a single and advanced to third on a pair of groundouts. Sophomore Kim White then sent a sinking liner into centerfield which Liz Foxley made a diving catch to save a run.

In game two, the bats woke up for both teams. The Cougars opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning and tacked on a run in the second for a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, MSOE got on the board. Sophomore Amanda Manssen led off with a double and scored two batters later on another double by junior Julia Marsh. Junior Rachel Ziemba then drought in another run with a single to make it 4-2.

White then led off the third inning with a single and came around to score on another Manssen double.

Concordia then broke the game open with a nine-run fourth inning. The visitors would then tack on one more run in the fifth before the game came to an end.

The Raiders return to the diamond Wednesday in a makeup doubleheader at Lakeland. First pitch of game one is at 3 p.m.
