Softball Scores Late, Sweeps WLC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE softball team scored five times over the final two innings of game two to grab a 5-2 victory and seal a doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran Thursday afternoon at Neumann Family Field.

The Raiders (15-7, 4-4 NACC) pulled ahead late in the first game as well, scoring runs in each of their final two innings again to pull away from the Warriors (8-12, 4-4 NACC) 3-1.

In game two, MSOE broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run seventh inning, scoring all of its runs with two outs. Sophomore Gabi Roderman started the rally with a walk. An error kept it going and junior Emily Snow drove in the go ahead run with a single. Sophomore Amanda Manssen followed with another run-scoring single and an error led to another insurance run.

WLC had opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning as the Raiders struggled to get their offense going.

The breakthrough finally came in the sixth inning as the Red & White came level on a two-run home run by sophomore Kim White. Manssen reached on a one-out infield single and came home on White's homer to left field.

In the bottom half of the frame, junior Liz Gale (4-0) ran into trouble with a single and double leading off the frame. With runners on second and third and no outs, she induced a comebacker to the circle and initiated a 1-3-2 double play, getting the hitter at first base and the lead runner at the plate. She came back to strike out the next hitter to set up the seventh inning.

Gale struck out seven over 6.1 innings for her fourth win of the season. She scattered six hits and did not walk a batter. Senior Sara McConnell came on to retire both hitters she faced, including with a strikeout, to earn the save.

Snow, Manssen, and White finished with two hits each in game two while juniors Rachel Ziemba and Julia Marsh collected three hits each in the opener.

It was Marsh that scored the first run as MSOE took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game one. She led off the frame with a single and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. Ziemba then followed with a single and Snow hit a sac fly to open the scoring

WLC then opened the fourth inning with a lead-off home run to tie the score at 1-1.

The Raiders took the lead with a single run in the sixth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh. Snow led off the sixth with a single and Manssen followed with a double. White stroked the third-straight hit to start the inning, a single to right field which scored Snow.

In the seventh, a walk by sophomore Riley Rossbach and a Marsh double put two runners in scoring position. Two batters later, Ziemba singled to center field to plate Rossbach.

Two pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the circle. McConnell (2-1) picked up her second win of the season, pitching the final 4.0 innings in relief. She struck out seven and allowed just a hit and walk. Freshman Lorrin Pondo also allowed one hit and one walk, striking out a pair in 3.0 innings.

After three-straight days with doubleheaders, and eight games in five days, the Raiders now have two days off before returning to the field against Concordia Wisconsin Sunday at MSOE Athletic Field.
