Softball Settles for Split With Edgewood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE softball team rebounded from a last at-bat loss in game one to defeat Edgewood 9-3 in game two and force a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field.

The Raiders (24-12, 11-9 NACC) fell in game on 6-5 after leading 5-4 heading into the seventh inning. They then jumped on the Eagles (15-19, 7-13 NACC) with four runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Junior Emily Snow went 3-for-3 with a home run and double in the second game, scoring three times and driving in three runs. Sophomore Kim White also drove in three with a pair of base hits.

Junior Liz Gale (7-0) remained perfect in the circle with 4.0 innings of work in the start. She did not allow an earned run and struck out two. Senior Sara McConnell stole the show late, throwing 3.0 innings to close out the game with nine strikeouts.

Edgewood pushed across an unearned run in the top half of the first inning before MSOE went to work in the home half of the frame. An error and a walk got the ball rolling before White hit a one-out double to score a run. Then, a hit batter loaded the bases. Freshman Lorrin Pondo drew an RBI walk and, two batters later, junior Julie Marsh hit a two-run single.

The visitors pulled a run back in the third inning only for the Raiders to put up another crooked number in the fourth. Marsh led off with a single and Snow drove in a run two batters later with a double. Sophomore Amanda Manssen followed with a single and stole second. Then, White hit a two-run single to make it 7-3.

Snow later led off the sixth inning with her school-record tying eighth career home run and junior Emma Megal hit an RBI double later in the frame to open a seven-run advantage.

In game one, MSOE found itself playing catch-up. The Eagles broke a scoreless tie with a run in the fourth inning. The Red & White then answered in kind with an RBI groundout from senior Caitlyn Moran in the bottom of the inning.

A three-run home run in the fifth inning then staked the visitors to a 4-1 lead before the Raiders got something going. They pulled two runs back in the fifth loading the bases on two walks and an error. Then, Manssen came through with a two-run single to make it 4-3.

MSOE took the lead in the sixth inning with another two-run rally. Back-to-back singles to lead off the inning set the tone. Snow delivered the first RBI with a run-scoring single. Another walk loaded the bases, allowing Manssen to force in the go-ahead run with another free pass.

Edgewood then answered with a pair of base-runners to lead off the seventh inning. After Pondo came back to retire the next two hitters on a popup and a strikeout, Megan Hauge came up with a two-run double to give the Eagles the lead once more. The Red & White attempted to rally but had to rebound after a double play and could not get the tying run past second base.

Pondo (12-10) went the distance and struck out eight. She was charged with five earned runs on nine hits. She added two hits at the plate.

MSOE finished with just six hits in the game but drew 10 walks. Manssen drove in three runs with a single and two walks while junior Rachel Ziemba and sophomore Kiki Davis each walked twice, as well.

The Raiders close out the regular season Sunday against Concordia Wisconsin. They are in a battle for a NACC Tournament place and will look to lock up their standing with at least one win.
