Florida Sun Shines on Raiders Softball

CLERMONT, Florida – The MSOE Softball team traveled to Florida to get some early competition as they have set their sights on making an impact on the NACC.  So far…So good!

 Over the past couple of days, the Raiders have played four games.  Here are some of the highlights.

Game 1: MSOE vs. Johnson & Wales; Win 2-1

  • In her MSOE debut, Emily Wiederholt throws a 1-hit gem with 14 strikeouts to earn the win in the circle. 
  • Wiederholt gave up a leadoff double to the 1st batter of the game, however, no other hits were allowed from there.
  • Trailing 0-1 in the bottom of the 6th with 2-outs.  Freshman Kara McKenna drew a walk.  Pinch runner Alyssa Baffin entered to run for McKenna.  Senior Emma Megal sent a deep shot to the wall in left to score Baffin from first to tie the game.
  • The Raiders took advantage of the time they had.  In the 7th, Junior Amanda Manssen hit a rope up the middle to advance the players.  Senior Rachel Ziemba scored to get the win for the Red and White.

Game 2: MSOE vs. Augustana (IL); Loss 2-10

  • It was a tight game (2-2) until the 5th inning when the Vikings scored 6 to eventually take the game.
  •  Emily Snow got back on track hitting 2-2, and driving in 2 runs.
  • Augustana had 15 hits to MSOE's 8. 

Game 3: MSOE vs. Saint Mary's (MN); Win 8-6

  • It was like a tennis match as both teams volleyed points until MSOE eventually came out on top.
  • Both teams did well in the batter's box.  MSOE had 13 hits on 36 at bats, while Saint Mary's had 9 hits on 30 at bats.
  • Rachel Ziemba had 4 hits on 5 at bats scoring twice and driving in 1 run.
  • Emily Wiederholt (4IP, 2SO) and Lorrin Pondo (5IP, 4SO) split the game with Pondo getting the win. 

Game 4: MSOE vs. Hanover; Win 6-1

  • MSOE took advantage of key hits to propel them to another victory.
  • The teams were at a stalemate with MSOE holding a slight advantage 1-0 in the 2nd inning.
  • The floodgates opened as the Red and White scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning.
  • Rachel Ziemba continued her hitting as she went 2 for 2 and added 2 runs of her own.
  • Amanda Manssen started things off with a single that drove in Ziemba.
  • Liz Gale pitched for the Raiders 3rd win. 

The Raiders return to the field Thursday as they face Capital at 10:45am and Neumann at 1:15pm.
