Raiders Down Sabres In Doubleheader Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILWAUKEE – MSOE softball welcomed Marian University to Milwaukee this afternoon, looking to create some space between the two in the standings. Thanks to a hot start in the first game, and come from behind heroics in the second, the Raiders now hold a 5-1 record in NACC play with 6-1 and 4-3 wins over the Sabres.

RESULTS
Game One
Marian – 1
MSOE Raiders – 6

Game Two
Marian – 3
MSOE Raiders – 4

HOW IT HAPPENED
MSOE (14-6, 5-1 NACC) gave starter Emily Wiederholt (Cuba City, Wis. / Cuba City) plenty of support runs early in game one, allowing her to throw another impressive outing. Amanda Manssen (Bull Valley, Ill. / McHenry West) kicked off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate a run, with Emma Megal (Elm Grove, Wis. / Brookfield East) following up one batter later with a bases clearing two RBI triple to put the Raiders up 3-0. MSOE scored another run in the second and plated two more on back to back plays in the third. Wiederholt only allowed Marian (11-8, 3-3 NACC) five baserunners to work with, giving up her only run allowed in the sixth as she went the distance for the 6-1 victory.

The tables turned in the second ballgame, as it was the Sabres who grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the first. The Raiders weren't deterred however, as they chipped away with a single run in the bottom of the first, second, and third to tie it at 3-3. We move to the bottom of the sixth, when Emily Snow (Long Beach, Calif. / Millikan) singled with two on to score what would eventually be the game winning run. Lorrin Pondo (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Bolingbrook) didn't have her best stuff, but she settled down after the initial big inning to allow just two hits in the last six Marian at-bats for the 4-3 win.

What a difference a year makes. While the conference season is far from over, the Raiders have shown year over year improvement early on. The Red & White have gone 5-1 through their first six NACC games, compared to 2018 when they started off 2-4.
