MSOE Athletics to Add Women's Wrestling, Names Mike Schmidt Head Coach

MILWAUKEE – Interim Athletic Director Bill Massoels is proud to announce that MSOE will be adding women's wrestling as it 28th varsity sport, with Mike Schmidt named as its first head coach.

"I'm thrilled about the addition of women's wrestling for both our department and our students-athletes. The sports itself has seen such a rise in recent years and I could not see a better person to lead the program than Mike."

Women's wrestling is one of the fastest growing collegiate sports. Currently it is an emerging sport by the NCAA with now more than 100 colleges offering women's wrestling as a varsity sport, according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association.

Schmidt, who has been at the helm of men's wrestling program since 2018, will be the head coach of both programs. Since Schmidt arrival to campus, the men have finished as high as sixth at the conference championship, along with coaching five NWCA All-America Scholar Athletes.

"I'd like to thank Tim Valley and Bill Massoels for their contributions in bringing women's wrestling to MSOE. As one of the top universities in the midwest, MSOE offers a unique opportunity for women who want to pursue a degree in a STEM field and continue wrestling at the collegiate level."
