WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The MSOE softball bats came alive today as the Raiders took down No. 14 Wartburg College in a 5-1 victory, following that up with a high-scoring 9-6 win against University of Dubuque at the 2023 Spring Games.

MSOE RAIDERS – 9
Dubuque - 6

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Game One
    • It was a quiet affair until the bottom of the third inning as Caroline Fouras drew a walk to start the inning before Jocelyn Clodi singled for two runners on base for Grace Salaja. She reached on a fielder's choice as Faith Matta drew another walk for bases loaded as Jenna Trewyn stepped up to the plate. A two-run single from Trewyn brough Salaja and Clodi around to score to give MSOE (4-2) a 2-0 lead.
    • The Raiders struck again in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the lead as Lauren Stefanczyk stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third and brought Trewyn home on a single, as Celine Pachero grounded out to the second baseman to bring Lexi Koepke in to score as well. Fouras kept the rally going with a single of her own to bring Stefanczyk in for the final run of the inning to put the Raiders ahead 5-0.
    • Wartburg (2-4) made one last effort for late inning heroics showing plate discipline drawing multiple walks forcing bases loaded. The Knights added one run on the board, but the Raider defense held strong to finish the game for the upset.
  • Game Two
    • The scoring started immediately as in the top of the first inning, Morgan Long stepped up to the plate with Trewyn and Faith Matta in scoring position, bringing both around to score from an error from the second basemen. University of Dubuque (1-7) responded with a large rally in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs of their own to take a 4-2 lead after just an inning of play.
    • The Raiders worked quickly to tie the game up as in the top of the second inning, Carley Witteveen hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Fouras home to score. In the top of the next inning, Stefanczyk hit another sacrifice fly for the Raiders, bring Matta into score to tie the game at 4. The Spartans responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own to have a 6-4 lead after three innings.
    • Matta responded once again with a hit through the right side to bring Clodi around the score to put her and Salaja in scoring position. Trewyn stepped to plate next and delivered with a single to centerfield to bring both around to score to take a 7-6 lead.
    • The Raiders added insurance in the sixth inning as with runners on first and third, Matta stole second drawing an error from the catcher to bring Salaja into score. Long connected a few pitches later with a single into right center for another RBI to extend the lead to 9-6, which proved to be final score.
