MILWAUKEE – MSOE men's lacrosse kicked off their 2023 NACC slate at a very cold and windy Viets Field today when they hosted Illinois Tech. A big run to start the game gave the Red & White enough runway to fend off a late attack from the Scarlet Hawks in a 14-9 win on Saturday.
RESULT
Illinois Tech – 9
MSOE RAIDERS – 14
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MSOE (3-3, 1-0 NACC) began the game by scoring five straight goals over the first 20 minutes of action. Sam Thompson sandwiched tallies between two from Peter Russchenberg, and Tanner Whipps made it 5-0 before Illinois Tech (3-4, 0-1 NACC) found the scoresheet.
- The Scarlet Hawks netted two man-up goals in the second quarter, but it wasn't enough to threaten the Raiders 8-3 lead heading into halftime. MSOE outscored IIT 4-2 in the third as well, giving the Red & White a seven goal cushion heading into the final frame.
- The Raiders needed those insurance goals though. Thompson and Russchenberg each added another goal to their totals in the quarter to give them four on the day but three straight strikes in the final minutes from Illinois Tech got them within five of the lead with 1:16 left to go.
- However, the Red & White defense stood tall. They were able to shut down the Scarlet Hawks and prevent any more damage in a 14-9 win to move to .500 on the season.
RAIDER REMARKS
- MSOE leads the young all-time series against Illinois Tech 3-0.
- Tanner Whipps is just three points away from entering the top three in Raiders history in that category. He currently sits at 145 after today's game.
