MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's soccer team hosted the Cougars of Concordia University Chicago on Saturday afternoon, kicking off the opening round of the NACC (Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) Tournament with a 3-1 victory.
RESULT
MSOE RAIDERS – 3
CUC Cougars – 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars (7-9-4, 3-5-4) set the tone early, shocking the Raiders (14-4-2, 9-1-2 NACC) as CUC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over MSOE after converting a corner kick opportunity inside the box. The Raiders would get back on track and knot the game up at the 12:12 mark of the first half, as Grace Quinn put a laser of shot past the CUC goalie, courtesy of a set-up pass from Faith Papazoglou.
- MSOE would finally break ahead at the midway point of the first half, with Claire Bradford threading a pass to Rosario Etcheverria Abuin to put the Red and White in the driver's seat. Quinn would add her second goal of the game at the 34:30 mark, as the graduate student placed the ball in the top right corner of the goal, just past the outstretched arms of the CUC keeper to bring the Viets Field faithful to their feet.
- Samantha Shaver nearly extended the lead to 4-1 in favor of the Raiders, but saw the goal waved off after a penalty inside the box as the Red and White shifted into cruise control. The Raiders would hang on to survive and advance in the conference tournament, despite the early scare from CUC, by a score of 3-1 as the Red and White outshot the Cougars 31-to-4 across 90 minutes of play.
