Women's Basketball Stopped by #21 Pioneers in Season Opener

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's basketball team opened their 2024-25 campaign in the Kern Center on Friday night, as the Red and White squared off against the #21 Carroll University Pioneers.  Despite a close first half, the full-court press of the Pioneers was too much for the Raiders to overcome in the second half as the fell 74-60.

RESULT

MSOE RAIDERS – 60

Carroll University - 74

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a tale of two halves for the Raiders (0-1, 0-0 NACC) and #21 Pioneers (1-0, 0-0 CCIW) as they traded the lead across the first quarter, with the Raiders taking a 10-6 advantage at the midway point of the frame thanks to a jumper from Elly Kohl.  The Raiders shooting began to go cold as the quarter winded down but another layup from Kohl and a made jump shot from Raekyiah Williams would put the Raiders up one at the end of the first.  Mahima Chokshi would open the scoring in the second with a three, as MSOE's largest lead would be a five-point margin following a fastbreak jumper from Kohl off a slick feed from Chokshi.  Carroll would begin to mount a comeback at the halfway mark of the second frame, trading makes with the Raiders before going on a late run, putting the Pioneers up 35-33 at the break.
  • The Pioneers would utilize a full-court press in the second half, as the Raiders offense was unable to get in rhythm against the hectic defensive look from Carroll, as MSOE shot just 25% from three-point range.  The Raiders would be outscored 22-9 in the third, as Pioneers shot 55.56% in the frame while holding the Red and White to just 36.36%.  Despite a push in the fourth, the Raiders would fall to the #21 ranked team in the country by a final score of 74-60, as Carroll outscored MSOE 38-24 in the paint.
