MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's hockey team returned to the Kern Center on Saturday night, as the Red and White evened up their two game series against Lawrence University with a 2-0 shutout win over the Vikings courtesy of a strong performance in net from
Spencer Northway.
FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 2
Lawrence - 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a physical contest between MSOE (1-2-1, 1-1-0 NCHA) and Lawrence (2-2-0, 1-1-0) as neither team wanted to give an inch in the opening minutes. The Raiders went to the power play at the midway point of the first period after a kneeing penalty was assessed against the Vikings, but the Raiders were turned away by Lawrence penalty kill, despite shots on net from Jacob Bosse, Carson Jones and Adam Smith. At the end of the first, both teams were scoreless with the Vikings outshooting the Raiders eight to six.
- The Red and White would finally break through in the second period after a five minute power play from the Raiders went by without capitalizing, the Vikings continued to shoot themselves in the foot, committing back-to-back infractions for tripping and too many men on the ice. This opened the door for the Raiders powerplay to finally connect, as Seth Bernard fed Cole Beilke to put the Raiders ahead 1-0 with just over six minutes to play in the second frame.
- The Vikings would come out shooting in the third period as goalie Spencer Northway put on a clinic in net, sending away every shot Lawrence sent his way, including a couple impressive flashes of the glove. The Raiders would extend their lead at the halfway mark of the third period as Eddie Shepler put one past the Vikings goalie, thanks to a beautiful pass from Bosse, as the Red and White secured their first conference win of the season as they shut down the Vikings offense.
