Men's Volleyball Drops Four Set Battle With #11 Cardinals

BEREA, Ohio – The MSOE men's volleyball team took #11 St. John Fisher University to the wire in all four sets in day two of the Baldwin Wallace Invitational but suffered their second loss after the four set battle with the Cardinals.

RESULT
MSOE RAIDERS – 1

#11 St. John Fisher - 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Things were kicked up a notch from yesterday as neither side controlled the first set until midway through after back-to-back kills from Matthew Schultz started a 6-0 to let MSOE (0-2, 0-0 NACC) go up 17-12. After St. John Fisher (7-0, 0-0 UVC) broke up the run, James Zippay went on a run of his own as the Raiders took the next four points with two service aces and a kill from him to sit comfortably 21-13 before taking the opening set 25-18.
  • Similar shades of the prior set reappeared in set two as it was the Raiders who set the tone midway through both were in a standstill with a 4-0 run that saw Seth Thomas produce back-to-back service aces. The Red & White sat comfortably in the lead until it was 19 all when the Cardinals closed on a run to take the set 25-22.
  • The marathon of the third set saw the Cardinals create the first run after things were tied at seven and took a 11-7 lead. The Raiders made an immediate response after a dump from Parker Rings started a 5-0 that was capped by a block from him to take a 12-11 lead. A massive kill from Tommy Clausz at the front of the net gave the Red & White a 19-15 before the Cardinals clawed back to tie things at 21 to begin the long stretch that ended with a kill from the opposition to take the set 31-29.
  • The Cardinals used that momentum to open the fourth set to make it 5-2 quickly, but the Raiders closed to go down 11-10 after two kills from Thomas and an ace from Clausz. Back-to-back blocks from Rings and Matthew Schultz helped give the Red & White a 21-18, but the Cardinals went on a killing spring to finish to steal it 25-23.
