BEREA, Ohio – The MSOE men's volleyball team closed out the Baldwin Wallace Invitational Sunday morning, dropping a four-set battle with #13 University of California-Santa Cruz.
RESULT
MSOE RAIDERS – 1
#13 UC-Santa Cruz - 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After MSOE (0-3, 0-0 NACC) took the opening point, Santa Cruz (7-4, 0-0 DIII Independent) fired off the next three to have the early advantage. Back-to-back kills from James Zippay and a kill from Seth Thomas put the Raiders ahead 8-6 and held the lead until midway through. Later in the set, Thomas helped the offensive efficiency to take charge over the Banana Slugs before Zippay and Callan Harris seal the first set 25-22.
- After a slow start offensively for the Banana Slugs to open the second set, they rattled off five straight to take a 6-3 lead but was quickly answered by the Raiders to tie it at six after Tommy Clausz and Harris stuffed them at the net. The Banana Slugs regrouped from there and took a lead as large as seven midway through that allowed them close easily to win the set 25-19 to tie it at a set a piece.
- The Banana Slugs didn't lose steam to begin the third, taking a 10-5 lead to begin, but was halted by a 6-1 run by the Red & White to tie it at 11 after a solo block from Zippay. The set then went all the way to the wire that saw the Banana Slugs pull through to take it 25-23. The same gameplay appeared in the fourth until the Banana Slugs went on a 5-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. The Raiders clawed back to tie it at 18 after two kills from Thomas but was silenced from there to drop the final set 25-22.
