Sophomores Lead Men's Wrestling at CUW Invite

MEQUON, Wis. – The MSOE men's wrestling team competed at the CUW Invite on Saturday, as the nine Raiders in the lineup took on opponents from fourteen other schools at the annual tournament hosted by the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Toren Vandenbush was the top finisher of the day for the Red and White, as the sophomore recorded five wins on his run to third place at 174.  Vandenbush started off the afternoon with an 18-1 tech fall win, followed up by a 5-3 decision victory.  After dropping a bout 6-2 via decision and heading to the consolation bracket, the Belgium, Wisconsin native picked up two more decision wins over University of Dubuque and UW-Stevens Point to advance to the third-place bout.  Vandenbush would emerge victorious an 8-5 decision win over Hesston Johnson of Wartburg, locking up third place with the clutch win.
  • Fellow sophomore Jackson Hughes would go all the way to the championship match of the consolation bracket at 184, picking up four wins on the afternoon.  After dropping his second round bout, Hughes ripped off three straight victories, highlighted by a pinfall win in 2:41 and a 12-1 major decison triumph.  The West Salem, Wisconsin native would battle in his final match of the afternoon but came up just short in a 5-4 decison loss.
  • Senior Gavin Graham would pick up a fifth-place finish at 197 after starting his tournament run off with an 11-5 decision win and an 8-5 decision win.  The West Allis, Wisconsin product would bounce back after a pinfall loss in the semifinals, recording a 14-9 decision win before locking up fifth place following a medical forfeit.
  • Alex Morales would add a sixth-place finish for the Raiders after the sophomore picked up four wins in Mequon.  Morales scored three hard-fought decision victories at 149 to open the tournament, before dropping to the consolation bracket after a decision loss in the quarterfinals.  Morales would pick up his final win of the day in sudden victory, besting his opponent from UW-Whitewater 4-1.
WHO'S ON DECK
The Raiders will take on both Illinois Wesleyan University and Augustana College on Tuesday, December 2nd in Rock Island, Ill.  Matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 P.M.
