Raiders and Sabres End Weekend in Shootout

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's hockey team closed out their weekend series with Marian University on Saturday night, as the Raiders and Sabres needed a shootout after 65 minutes of play.

FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 1

Marian Sabres – 1 (Marian wins shootout 1-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Marian (7-13-1, 4-9-1 NCHA) took an early 1-0 lead over MSOE (10-8-3, 5-7-2 NCHA) in Philip Rondina's first career start as the Sabres scored at even strength just six minutes into the first period.  The Raider offense would take advantage at the 13:53 mark of the first, as Sam Lyons found the back of the net on a slick pass from Gramm McCormack.  The Raiders would have a chance to take the lead on a long power play bridging the first and second periods, but the Raiders and Sabres would go into the first intermission knotted up at 1-1.
  • On the powerplay to start the second period, Lyons and Seth Bernard would get good looks but were turned away by the Sabre goalie as the penalty clock expired. The Raiders would have another chance with a man up after a 5-minute boarding penalty against the Sabres midway through the second, but shots from Jacob Bosse and Casey Roepke were turned away before an MSOE penalty led to 4-on-4 hockey.  The teams would go 4-on-4 once more before the end of the period but the scoreboard would stay unchanged at 1-1.
  • The Raiders record only two shots in the final period of regulation, as Rodina bounced back from his early mistake to shutdown the Sabres the rest of the way, stopping all eight shots from Marian in the third and all four in overtime on the way to 30 saves.  MSOE would have a chance to win in overtime on an offensive flurry from Cole Beilke, Bernard and Carson Jones but the Sabres would hang on to force a shootout where they escaped with a 1-0 win.
