Men's Volleyball Drops Tri-Match to Kinsmen and Pointers

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's volleyball team hosted their annual tri-match on Sunday, playing host to #8 California Lutheran University and University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Raiders battled at the net to keep things interesting in the four-set loss while falling in a heartbreaker to the Pointers.

RESULTS
MSOE RAIDERS – 1
#8 Cal Lutheran – 3

MSOE RAIDERS – 2
Wisconsin-Stevens Point - 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • vs. #8 Cal Lutheran
    • Things got started when Tommy Clausz and Seth Thomas combined for a block to start a 2-0 run for MSOE (1-7, 0-0 NACC) before Cal Lutheran (14-2) took charge for a 14-9 lead midway through. The Kingsmen continued to roll on a 7-1 run to explode away and take 25-18 set one win.
    • The Raiders settled in during the set second to take a 16-13 lead after Matthew Schultz buried a service ace. As the Raiders were only able to keep a small hold onto their lead, Thomas and Clausz connected on kills past the 25 point to tie up the match with a 28-26 set two win. The Raiders didn't find an offensive rhythm after that, hitting .091 and .000 over the final two sets as the Kingsmen finished things off with 25-18 and 25-22 set wins.
    • Clausz was the only Raider with double-digit kill totals, connecting with 10 while Callan Harris had nine and Thomas and Antonio Llona Baez had eight. Matthew Shavez had 23 assists to lead the Raiders, followed closely by Parker Rings with 20. Clausz also had a massive presence at the net, leading with nine blocks, followed Thomas with three and Brendan Nesemann with two.
  • vs. Wisconsin-Stevens Point
    • Coming off their match, Stevens Point (12-6) opened on a 5-2 run before a 4-0 run from the Raiders that saw two kills from Schultz gave them a 6-5 lead. Another run that was capped by an ace from Rings put the Red & White ahead 13-8 but the Pointers rallied late in the set to take it 25-22.
    • After the Pointers led for most of the beginning of the second set, they couldn't overcome their miscues late as the Raiders took a 22-17 advantage. After the Pointers battled after Llona Baez put the Raiders a set point, a service error came them a 25-20 set two win. The Raiders offense began to click in the third, hitting .462, and completely dismantled the Pointers, taking it 25-14 after Clausz ended it with his signature ace.
    • Over the course of the final two sets, the Pointers used early leads to allow them to coast. In the fourth, the Pointers took the lead at the ten-point mark and closed on a 7-1 run to win 25-18. In the fifth, the Pointers took the lead at the 8-7 mark when they flipped sides and went on a 7-2 rampage to win 15-10.
    • Schultz led one of three Raiders in double-digit kills with 15, followed by Harris with 13 and Llona Baez with 10. Rings had a mainstay as a setter, racking up 33 assists with Chavez totalling 18.
