Raiders Fall to Piper in Four Sets at Viking Classic

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The MSOE women's volleyball team kicked off the weekend, taking on Hamline University at the Viking Classic, hosted by Augustana College. After pulling away late to take the opening set, the Raiders were defeated in four to the Pipers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After kicking off the match with an ace, Maddie Abel picked up two more just points later to put MSOE (1-7, 0-0 NACC) ahead 8-3. Hamline (2-5, 0-0 MIAC) rallied in a massive way with four straight service aces to tie up the set at eight until errors from them began to trickle to give the Raiders a 13-11 lead midway through. Things were neck and neck as the set was tied up until the 22 mark when Gillian McDaniel let the charge to get two kills to give the Raiders a 25-22 set one win. 
  • The Pipers found themselves a complete hot hand in the second set, blowing away the Raiders to win 25-6. Ashley Murphy helped get the Raiders back in the swing of things in the third set with a pair of kills to lead 6-4 but the Pipers put together a run to go ahead 12-6. A dump from Morgan Borchardt brought the Raiders to within two later on but the Pipers held steady to win 25-19.
  • After things were neck and neck to begin the fourth set, miscues from the Pipers gave the Raiders the slight edge to lead 11-8 near the midway point. A 5-0 run from the Pipers created a massive momentum switch, giving them a 21-17 advantage. A 5-0 run from the Raiders, including back-to-back aces from Katie Moser put them at set point, but they couldn't put the final nail in the coffin to drop the set 28-26.

The Raiders will close out the Viking Classic tomorrow, September 13th, when they take on Grinnell College and Augustana. Game times are set for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
