Raiders Stifle Stars to Open Conference Play

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The MSOE women's soccer team competed in their conference opener on Wednesday afternoon, as they made the trip to Dominican University for a clash with the Stars.  The Raiders would shut down the Stars and light up the scoreboard on the way to their first conference win of the season.

RESULT
MSOE RAIDERS – 3
Dominican University Stars – 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trading shots to open the contest, it was the Raiders (1-4-1, 0-0-0 NACC) that would break through first, as Elizabeth Kuhn fired a rocket of a shot from outside of the box and buried in the back of the Stars (1-2-1, 0-0-0 NACC) net to give MSOE a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.  The Raiders would double their lead with just under seventeen minutes remaining in the half, as Kuhn drove down the left side of the field before connecting with Faith Papazoglou, who buried her first goal of the season on the connection from the team captains. Page Sanchez would stop the only shot she faced in the first 45 minutes as the Red and White maintained their 2-0 lead heading to halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, the Raiders limited the Stars offensive chances as any chance of a Dominican comeback began to dwindle.  Kit Gormley would feed Rosario Etcheverria Abuin for the third MSOE goal of the game, as the Red and White had 30 minutes left to hold off the Stars.  The Raiders defense would smother the Stars attack, highlighted by the Red and White holding off a frenzy of four Dominican shots in less than four minutes of play.  MSOE would secure their first conference win of the season in their first attempt, as they look to return to the NACC Championship for the third straight season.
