RIVER HILLS, Wis. – The MSOE men's hockey team fell to Marian University on Saturday night, as the Sabres swept the Red and White following a defensive slugfest that ended in overtime.
FINAL SCORE
Marian Sabres – 1
MSOE RAIDERS - 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With a burst pipe forcing the Red and White to play away from the Kern Center for a weekend, Marian (7-12-2, 6-8-0 NCHA) looked to take advantage of three early MSOE (8-11-2, 5-7-2 NCHA) penalties, but the Raiders penalty kill unit came through in a big way, shutting down the Sabres attack including a 5-on-3 chance. After a back-and-forth first period, the Raiders would outshoot Marian 14 to 7 in the second period, but the Raiders were unable to find the back of the net despite a couple good looks from Cole Beilke and Brennan Dickey.
- The third period saw the pace of play ramp up, with neither team able to establish much of a rhythm. The Raiders would nearly take the lead at the 7:03 mark, but an Ethan Thombs shot was less than an inch away from the net, drawing pipe and keeping things deadlocked at 0-0. In the extra period, the Raiders would win both draws, but the Sabres would record the game winner on an unassisted effort as the Red and White dropped the series but locked up a playoff position with the loss.
