Raiders Drop Defensive Struggle With Marian 2-0

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE hockey team held tough defensively, but could not get on the board in falling to Marian 2-0 Saturday night at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (0-6, 0-6 NCHA) were shutout for the second time in their weekend series with the Sabres (3-4, 3-3 NCHA) after a 4-0 decision Friday in Fond du Lac.

Freshman Austin Campbell got his first collegiate start in goal and made 23 saves, while conceding just one goal. Marian was able to tack on a second goal against an empty net to put the final outcome out of reach.

After a 12-5 MU shot advantage in the opening period, MSOE put together a solid frame of pressure in the second. Aided by three power plays, the Raiders owned the shot column 10-3, but could not find the back of the net.

One of those three Sabre shots came at 9:10 and put the visitors ahead 1-0. Ashton Reinbolt claimed the game-winner on assists from Aaron Leonard and Brian Berger.

In the third period, the Red and White kept pressuring for the equalizer. MSOE Mark Ostapina called timeout with 46.3 seconds remaining and pulled Campbell when MU was on the power play. The Sabres' second goal came with the net empty, on a back-handed attempt by Adam Ritchie.

For the game, Marian outshot MSOE 24-21. Josh Baker made 21 saves for the visitors to claim a second-straight shutout.

The Raiders are back on the ice Friday, hosting No. 5/6 UW-Stevens Point at the Kern Center. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
