Box Score ASHLAND, Wis. – Freshman Dan Sherer scored two goals and assisted for another as the MSOE hockey team defeated Northland, 5-1 Saturday afternoon at the Bay Area Civic Center.
The Raiders (1-9, 1-7 NCHA) scored three times in the first 10 minutes to pick up their first win of the season and score a series split with the Lumberjacks (2-9, 2-6 NCHA).
Sherer got MSOE on the board just 13 seconds into the game, taking a pass from sophomore goalie Nick Kohn and beating the NC goalie for his first collegiate goal. Sherer then added the game-winner at 7:39 off an assist from senior Michael Thompson.
Just 1:42 later, sophomore Casey Moneer added an insurance goal, finishing off assists from senior Devin Schmitt and sophomore Sean Van Eysden. The goal gave the Raiders a 3-0 first period lead and was their first goals in the opening period since the season opener.
The second period started off much like the first, as freshman Gunnar Regan scored just 22 seconds in to extend MSOE's lead to 4-0. Sophomore Patrick LeBeau set up the goal. Junior Laurie Gieni then capped the scoring at 8:07 of the third period to make it a 5-0 Raider lead.
Kohn made a return to goal after two games off, stopping 21 shots on the night to collect the win. The assist was his first collegiate point and MSOE's first goalie point since Feb. 12, 2011, when Connor Toomey assisted on a third-period goal against Lake Forest.
The Raider offense outshot the Jacks 46-22 in the game, forcing Northland's Mason Riley into 41 saves in goal. The 46 shots for the Red and White were its most in a game this season, while the scoring output was also a season high.
MSOE will look to build on the win next Friday when No. 7 UW-Eau Claire visits the Kern Center. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. in the Raiders' final game of the 2013 calendar year.
