Box Score MILWAUKEE - Three different players scored and the MSOE hockey team outshot Marian 44-18 to win 3-1 Friday evening at the Kern Center in its home opener.
The Raiders (1-4, 1-4 NCHA) got goals from freshmen Patrick Dwyer, Jerad Tafoya and Omar Mullan in getting past the Sabes (2-3, 2-3 NCHA) for their first win of 2014-15.
It was Marian that scored first, taking advantage of three first-period power plays. It was Matt Williams lighting the lamp at 13:03 to put the visitors ahead.
The lead would last through the opening frame, but MSOE put the pressure on to net the equalizer in the second period, gaining a 22-7 shot advantage to do so.
Dwyer broke through for the Raiders, taking a tremendous pass from freshman Eric Tien at the back post to tie the game at 1-1 at 9:06. Tien took advantage of line changes and threaded his pass through a crowd near the benches to Dwyer for the score. Mullan also had an assist on the goal.
Seven and a half minutes later, Tafoya came through with the game-winner. It was another back post goal for the Red & White. This time it was Tafoya there for the goal. He was assisted by sophomore Brent Wilcox and junior Evan Wilson.
MSOE continued to press in the final period to get an insurance goal, but did well to seal up its defensive zone and preserve the win. The final goal came after Marian pulled its goalie with just over 90 seconds remaining in regulation.
Freshman Zach Simpson cleared the zone with an outlet pass to Mullan, who played the puck forward towards the empty net. He caught up to the off-target puck and put into the net to secure the victory.
The Raiders got a strong defensive effort on the night and solid goaltending from junior Nick Kohn. He stopped 17 shots on the night for the win.
The weekend series shifts to Fond du Lac Saturday night. MSOE and Marian take the ice at 7 p.m.
