Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE hockey team tied a season-high with five goals and clinched a place in the Harris Cup Playoffs with a 5-1 victory over Concordia Wisconsin Friday evening at the Kern Center.
With the win, the Raiders (7-16-1, 6-11 NCHA) clinched their place in the Harris Cup Playoffs and can finish as high as the sixth seed with a series sweep of the Falcons (9-11-4, 6-9-2 NCHA) when the series shifts to Mequon Saturday.
The Red and White also remained unbeaten in the all-time series, beating CUW for the 14th-straight time and improving its all-time record in the series to 24-0-1.
MSOE jumped on Concordia out of the gates, outshooting the visitors 21-8 in the first period and getting a pair of goals from freshmen Brandon Unser and Jon Stevanovich.
Unser got the scoring started at 6:04 of the first period, finishing off the second of back-to-back shots in front of the net. His first shot was saved, but he put away the second for a 1-0 Raider lead. He was assisted by sophomore Patrick LeBeau.
MSOE struck for a second goal in the opening period, as Stevanovich found the back of the net at 9:48. Sophomore Matt Wilkins had his initial shot saved and Stevanovich was there on the back end to score the goal and make it 2-0.
The game leveled out a bit in the second period, with both team getting opportunities, but it was the Raiders that struck for a third goal, courtesy of freshman Brent Wilcox. His first collegiate goal came on the power play at 9:38, when he one-timed a shot over the goalie's shoulder from the right wing.
The Raiders added two more goals in the early stages of the third period to put the game out of reach. Senior West Bauman lit the lamp on a power play at 3:19 and his brother, junior Logan Bauman, followed suit at even strength at 5:32 to make it 5-0.
Concordia avoided the shutout midway through the third period, when Trammell Lynes scored a short-handed goal on a counter attack. The visitors gained some momentum from that point, but the MSOE defense finished strong.
The Raiders finished with a 50-34 shot advantage. Freshman Austin Campbell finished with 33 saves on the night and collected his fifth win of the season. A pair of goalies saw action in the nets for Concordia, with Domingo Torrenueva collecting 33 of the team's 45 saves.
