Raiders Stun No. 1 St. Norbert 2-1 on the Road

Box Score

DePERE, Wis. – Junior Nick Kohn made 35 saves and the MSOE hockey team scored two goals in the second period to upset No. 1 and defending national champion St. Norbert 2-1 Saturday evening at the Cornerstone Community Center.

The Raiders (11-7, 6-6 NCHA) were within 54 seconds of shutting the Green Knights (14-2-2, 10-1-1 NCHA), which entered the week leading the country averaging over five goals per game.

MSOE got all the offense it needed in the second period, as sophomore Cody Ganchar and junior Nick LaRue each scored goals to stake the team to a 2-0 advantage.

Ganchar continued his hot scoring streak of late, opening the game's scoring at 6:07 of the period off an assist from freshman Omar Mullan. Ganchar has now scored points in six of his last seven games, with the goal his fourth of the stretch.

The Raiders got the eventual game-winner at 17:38 when LaRue lit the lamp on the power play. His defensive linemate, sophomore Brent Wilcox set up the score and put the team ahead 2-0.

The second period was the one frame that the Red & White was able to get a foothold. It conceded a 13-10 shot advantage, but was also able to get the goals it needed for the victory.

Kohn was outstanding in the other two periods, as the MSOE defense faced shot deficits of 13-3 in the opening frame and 13-3 in the final period. The junior netminder was especially on his game in the third period, as the Green Knights pressured its attacking zone heavily over the final 10 minutes.

SNC pulled its goalie with just under two minutes remaining and was able to get on the board with 53.9 seconds to go in regulation. Cullen Bradshaw was able to take advantage of the extra man, finishing a loose puck in front of the Raider goal to halve the deficit.

The Raider defense was then able to ride out the final 54 seconds against six skaters to seal the victory.

St. Norbert finished with a 36-16 shot lead in the game. David Jacobson made 14 saves in the game and was handed his first loss of the season (12-1-1) in goal.

The Raiders are back on the ice next weekend, hosting Finlandia in a weekend series at the Kern Center beginning Friday with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
