Box Score MILWAUKEE – Five different players scored and senior Nick Kohn made 33 saves as the MSOE hockey team routed No. 3 Adrian 5-1 Friday night at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (1-0, 1-0 NCHA) led 2-1 entering the third period, but tacked on three goals in the final frame to pull away from the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1 NCHA). The Red & White scored two empty net goals in the final frame, including one short-handed by senior Nick LaRue.
MSOE scored twice in the waning minutes of the opening period to take a 2-0, only to see Adrian pull a goal back just 12 seconds later.
Senior Kevin LoGiudice open the season's scoring at 17:29 of the period off assists from junior Gage Christianson and sophomore Conner Enciso. Sophomore Zach Simpson then doubled the advantage off a rebound from freshman Michael Romund's initial shot at 19:12. Romund tallied an assist, as did sophomore Omar Mullan.
There were penalties both ways for hitting after the whistle on the goal, putting both teams down to four skaters. The Bulldogs were able to immediately capitalize, as Kyle Brothers scored at 19:24 to cut the visitors' deficit to 2-1.
After conceding an 11-8 shot advantage in the opening period, the Raiders outshot AC 10-8 in a scoreless second frame. MSOE had three power plays in the period to none for Adrian, but was unable to capitalize. The final power play started with just 1.1 second on the clock and junior Cody Ganchar was able to put a shot on goal off the power play.
The Bulldogs fought to equalize in the third period, but could not break down the Raider defense. Sophomore Chris Hinrichs netted a power play goal from sophomores James Ring and Jerad Tafoya to give MSOE an insurance goal, but that was just the beginning.
Adrian pulled their goalie during a power play and LaRue wristed a shot from near center ice to make it 4-1 at 16:43. The net was once again empty at 17:30 when Enciso lit the lamp to cap the scoring.
Kohn made 15 saves in the third period to preserve the victory. Tyler Parks played in goal for AC, the defending conference champion, and made 24 saves.
Adrian finished with a 34-29 shot edge in the game. MSOE was 1-for-5 on power plays, while killing off all three of the visitors' man avantages.
The season-opening series wraps up Saturday, when the teams return to the ice at 3 p.m.
