Box Score MILWAUKEE - The MSOE hockey team had six different players scored goals, and struck for two goals in each period, in handing Marian a 6-3 defeat in the opening game of their quarterfinals series in the NCHA Harris Cup Playoffs Friday evening at the Kern Center.
The fourth-seeded Raiders (17-9) snapped the No. 5 Sabres (13-12-1) eight-game unbeaten streak, which was tied for the longest in NCAA Division III, and took a 1-0 lead in the series. The quarterfinals wind up Saturday at the Kern Center with a 4 p.m. puck drop.
MSOE jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by freshman Chris Hinrichs and sophomore Brandon Unser in the opening period. Junior Casey Moneer had a hand in both scores, as Hinrichs lit the lamp at the 3:23 mark. Unser then scored at 15:22.
The Sabres pulled a goal back in the dwindling seconds of the period. Brian Berger nabbed a shorthanded goal just 16 seconds before the horn.
The second period featured four goals, with each team striking twice. MSOE, once again, struck early, as freshman Jerad Tafoya scored just 84 seconds into the period to re-establish the two-goal advantage at 3-1. Sophomore Cody Ganchar pushed that lead to 4-1 at 12:07, just 26 seconds into a Red & White power play.
Marian got back into the game, scoring back-to-back goals just 22 seconds apart. First, Warren Carter scored at 15:06 and Derek Thorogood pulled his team within a goal at 4-3 at 15:28.
In the third period, the game opened up and was played from end to end. Despite close calls both ways, it seemed as though the Raiders would see out the victory. Juniors Evan Wilson and Kevin LoGiudice removed all doubt, each scoring goals just 15 seconds apart.
Wilson scored at 17:09 off his torso and LoGiudice capped the game's scoring at 17:24 just after the face-off.
Junior Nick Kohn saw his shutout streak end at 145:49, but made 22 saves in the game to get the win. Mike Gudmansdon faced 38 Red & White shots on goal and stopped 32 for the visitors.
The game also marked the second time this season MSOE ended the nation's longest winning streak (Lake Forest, Feb. 6).
