Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Cody Ganchar scored the game-winner with 2:31 remaining the regulation to send the MSOE hockey team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over #13/12 Lake Forest Friday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (14-8, 9-6 NCHA) won their fourth-straight game, while snapping the Foresters' (13-4-5, 11-3-1 NCHA) 15-game unbeaten streak (11-0-4). The streak had been the longest in the nation.
Ganchar's winner came as MSOE was pressing for the game-winner and forged a 12-5 shot advantage in the final period.
Freshman Omar Mullan set up the winner, controlling the puck in the attacking zone alone during a line change. He held it long enough for reinforcements and found Ganchar in front of the net. He back-handed his shot past the goalie to provide the difference.
LFC actually jumped out to the 1-0 lead, scoring late in the first period. Jimmy Cusan scored off an assist from Shawn Nelson at 17:47 of the frame to stake the visitors to the lead.
Freshman Jerad Tafoya canceled out that score midway through the second frame, scoring unassisted at 10:53 to tie the game at 1-1.
Lake Forest outshot the Raiders in each of the first two periods and, despite the third-period advantage for MSOE, finished with a 35-34 edge in shots. Junior Nick Kohn outdueled Leo Podelsky for the win, stopping 34 shots to Podolsky's 32.
Neither team scored in three power play opportunities, with the Red & White killing off a first-period penalty that featured nine shots.
The series now shifts to Lake Forest, where the Raiders will go for the series sweep when the puck drops at 7 p.m.
