Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – Sophomore Clint Garris' short-handed empty net goal held up for the game-winner as the 15th-ranked MSOE hockey team prevailed in a wild finish, 3-2, at St. Scholastica Saturday evening at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Raiders (10-5, 5-5 NCHA) earned a weekend series split with the Saints (9-4-1, 7-3 NCHA) and picked up their sixth road win of the season.
MSOE led 1-0 after the first period, but the game did not see any more scoring until 32 seconds into the third period when St. Scholastica tied the score. Then, in the final three-plus minutes, there were three goals scored.
Sophomore Omar Mullan got the late scoring binge started, putting the Raiders ahead at 16:47 with a power play goal off an assist from sophomore James Ring.
CSS went on the power play at 18:05 and pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. Sophomore Clint Garris took advantage of the open net for the Red & White, netting the empty-net, short-handed goal unassisted at 18:50.
The game wasn't over. The Saints then pulled their goalie again at 19:23 and capitalized just two seconds later to make it 3-2. Five seconds after play resumed, the home team gambled again, but did not get a shot in the final 30 seconds.
Shots for the game were 24-22 in favor of the Raiders. They also capitalized on 1-of-5 power play chances and killed off all six St. Scholastica man advantages. The game was physical with 18 penalty minutes for MSOE and 28 for the Saints.
Senior Nick Kohn put together another strong game in goal, making 20 saves in the game. Tyler Bruggeman made 21 saves for CSS.
The Raiders are midway through a five-game road swing, returning to action at Finlandia Saturday in the first game of a weekend series.
