Box Score HANCOCK, Mich. – Junior Jordan Guth scored the game-winner at 17:39 of the third period to send the 14th-ranked MSOE hockey team to a 3-2 road victory over Finlandia Saturday evening at Houghton County Arena.
The Raiders (11-5, 6-5 NCHA) overcame an early 1-0 deficit with two goals in the second period, but necessitated the Guth winner to get past the Lions (1-14-3, 1-10-2 NCHA).
Finlandia stuck first just 5:05 into the first period as Alex Holm scored the first of two goals on the night for the home team, but MSOE scored in quick succession in the second frame to take a 2-1 lead into the final period.
Freshman Michael Romund equalized for the Red & White at the 8:34 mark off assists from senior Evan Wilson and sophomore Chris Hinrichs. Just over five minutes later, junior Cody Ganchar put the Raiders ahead. He finished off an assist from sophomore Omar Mullan.
The Raiders outshot the home side 8-2 in the period as it surged into the lead.
The Lions leveled the score at 2-2 at 11:56 to set up the dramatic final minutes.
MSOE outshot Finlandia 21-12 in the game, allowing its fewest shots to an opponent since Concordia Wisconsin managed just 12 shots on goal Feb. 4, 2011. The Raiders were 0-for-3 on power plays and killed off all five Lion power plays.
Senior Nick Kohn made 10 saves in the game. Matt Young stopped 18 shots for Finlandia, which played with an empty net over the final 2:03
The Raiders returns to the ice Sunday, wrapping up the weekend series when the puck drops at 1:15 p.m. central time.
