Balanced Raiders Down SMU to Win Fifth-Straight Game

Box Score

WINONA, Minn. – Six different players scored, including both of the Romund brothers, to send the MSOE hockey team to a fifth-straight road win, this time 6-4 over Saint Mary's Sunday evening at Saint Mary's Ice Arena.

The Raiders (8-3) scored twice in the opening period and then four times in the third to overcome a 3-2 deficit and upend the Cardinals (6-5-2).

Seniors Kevin LoGiudice, Evan Wilson, junior Gage Christianson, sophomore James Ring and freshmen Matthew Romund and Michael Romund each lit the lamp in the game, with LoGiudice, Wilson and Ring each adding assists.

LoGiudice struck first for the Red & White at 7:42 of the first period off assists from Wilson and sophomore Clint Garris. Christianson then doubled the advantage at 17:56 when he scored a goal in his second-straight game. Senior Nick LaRue and sophomore Omar Mullan each helped on the goal.

Saint Mary's bounced back quickly, pulling a goal back just 41 seconds into the second period as Jay Heinle got the home team on the board first. The team would score three times in the frame to take a 3-2 lead as the Cardinals then struck for two short-handed goals on the same Raider power play. Martin Gruse evened the scored at 10:25. Exactly one minute later, Chad Cesarz added a third unanswered goal for the Cardinals.

Much like SMU, the Raiders wasted little time in opening up the period scoring, leveling the game at 3-3 just 37 seconds into the third frame. Matthew Romund scored unassisted for the equalizer. Ring put the team back in the lead at 14:51 off Garris' second assist of the game and the help of sophomore Jerad Tafoya. Michael Romund then followed at 14:51 for the game-winner with an assist from Ring.

The Cardinals made it a one-goal game at 17:56 on a goal from Mike Mezzano setting up a frantic push for the equalizer in the final minutes, prompting the home team pulled their goalie with 1:03 remaining. Wilson capped the scoring with an empty-net goal off a pass from LoGiudice with 13 seconds on the clock.

With Saint Mary's entering the game third in the nation with 4.75 goals per game, the Raiders knew they would have to put pressure on the SMU defense. They succeeded, taking a season-high 51 shots to outshoot the home team 51-41 in the game and setting a season-high with six goals.

Senior Nick Kohn made a season-high 37 saves for his seventh win of the season. Phil Heinle stopped 45 shots in the game for the Cardinals.

Six different players scored in a game for MSOE for the first time since Feb. 16, 2013, when seven players scored in a 10-3 win over Northland. The Romund brothers are the first Raider siblings to score in the same game since Feb. 25, 2012, when Josh and Jordan Keizer each scored in a 7-2 rout of Lake Forest.

Coincidentally, MSOE will play at LFC Friday in a return to NCHA play.
