Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Omar Mullan tallied his first collegiate hat trick as the No. 15 MSOE hockey team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Lake Forest 4-1 Saturday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (9-4, 4-4 NCHA) conceded first for the second-straight day to the Foresters (6-7, 4-6 NCHA), but scored four unanswered goals to skate to the victory and secure a series split.
Mullan scored a team-high 15 goals last season, but entered the game with just three this season. He broke out in a big way, netting twice in the first period and completing the hat trick in the second frame.
Sophomore Clint Garris also scored a goal in the game, while juniors Gage Christianson and Jordan Guth notched two assists apiece.
LFC opened the game's scoring just 1:49 into the game when Davis Dekorte scored unassisted.
MSOE would respond through Mullan, as he scored his first of the night at the 8:53 mark of the first period on the power play. Christianson notched his first assist, while freshman Matthew Romund also helped on the goal.
Then, just 3:22 later, the Raiders pulled in the lead. Once again, Christianson set up Mullan for the goal, with an additional assist to Guth. Mullan completed the hat trick at 8:34 of the second period for the frame's only goal. Junior Cody Ganchar assisted on the score this time.
Early in the third period Garris added another insurance goal to seemingly clinch the game for the Red & White, converting the team's second power play score of the night at the 2:38 mark. Guth tallied his second assist of the night to set up the defenseman.
The Raiders handily outshot the visitors by a count of 46-24. They were successful on 2-of-6 power play opportunities, while killing off each of the Foresters' five man advantages.
Junior Austin Campbell got the start in goal and secured the win with 23 saves. Leo Podolsky stopped 42 shots for Lake Forest.
MSOE returns to the ice next weekend, opening a home-and-home series with Marian in Fond du Lac on Friday.
