Box Score ASHLAND, Wisconsin – Northland scored the game-winner just 29 seconds into the third period to hand the MSOE hockey team a 3-2 defeat Saturday afternoon at Bay Area Civic Center.
The Raiders (1-3-2, 1-3-2 NCHA) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but could not hold off the Lumberjacks (2-3-1, 1-2-1 NCHA) in the end.
Junior Clint Garris opened the scoring in an offensive opening period for MSOE. His power play goal at 6:49 of the period came part of a 17-6 shot advantage for the visitors. Senior Gage Christianson and sophomore Matthew Romund assisted on the goal.
The Red & White extended its lead at 3:33 of the second period as junior Brett Wagner scored off an assist from junior James Ring.
Northland wasted little time in mounting its comeback, pulling a goal back just 24 seconds after Wagner lit the lamp. It would then even the score at 2-2 with a power play goal at the 9:15 mark of the period.
The Lumberjacks then won the game by scoring early in the third period and holding off the Raiders' charge. They pulled their goalie for 1:17 in the closing minutes, but to no avail.
MSOE finished with a 34-33 shot advantage and went 1-for-3 on power plays compared to 1-for-5 by the Lumberjacks. Junior Zach Woodman got the start in goal and made 33 saves, while AJ Smith stopped 32 shots for NC
The Raiders return to action next weekend, taking a break from NCHA with five-straight non-league games—all at home. The first contest is Friday vs. UW-Stout.
